The amazingly talented Mykeljon is releasing his first international album and already has received rave reviews and accolades from American critics.

His 2012 album titled “World Stood Still” is a style of composition and playing which is special enough to incorporate several different genres of music, primarily jazz and rhythm and blues. The album is laden with solid performances and is as artistically rich as it is entertaining.

“World Stood Still” opens with its title track, one of the more pop oriented songs on the record. Accompanied by guitarist Bruce Kerr, who plays some tight, emphatic solos while also laying down a wonderfully driving bass line, the song’s hook is propelled by Mykeljon’s vocals, where he displays his talent for harmonies.

“World Stood Still” is a tremendously pleasant album that bounces between genres with effortless ease and showcases all the diverse talents Mykeljon’s picked up over the years. By surrounding himself with other stellar musicians, Mykeljon was able to lay down a solid collection of performances that capture the spirit of his song-writing. Reviewed by American Heath Andrews, “World Stood Still” has been awarded a five out of five star rating which is inevitably going to propel this very talented singer song-writer onto the world stage.

Mykeljon has barely let a day go past him without having a musical instrument in his hand. He started playing at the tender age of four years old. With that kind of passion from an early age as well as having an encouraging and musically educated godmother, Mykeljon found his way into being enrolled at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music in Brisbane. His studies there in guitar, voice, composition, production and arranging have contributed to his 2012 album.

Some of the tracks that show his vocal prowess include “Surrender to Love,” “Sacrifice.” “You Ran Away,” “Bleeding for Your Kiss,” and “Sorrow.”

Mykeljon said the hardest thing through the entire project is that it took two years to complete, and the only thing you can do is to take the time! I think there is a space in most people's day to listen to this album. Recorded in Auckland at Ellamy Studios with musicians from all over the globe, it truly is bound for international ears.

Mastering the album was done in New Jersey USA. “I said to the sound engineers that I’d really like to start with this track and end with this one. I was too close to it and so allowed the engineers to choose what track went where, and they did a fantastic job!”

“I’ve already started working on the next album and I have got six to seven tracks already sorted. As a songwriter, artist and guitarist it’s an interesting line to walk; this album had to focus me as a singer/songwriter rather than a feature guitarist.

“Each song has its own life, it develops and grows and has twists and turns along the way. I think really you listen to the song and it will tell you where it’s got to go and I think that is my approach. Something vital for this last album was that I really wanted the musical integrity of this album to shine, and the musical integrity is nothing short of amazing!

“If you let people do their thing - and that’s when I think they shine the most - you allow  freedom for people to bring their own personality out, and that successful philosophy works in aiming for a particular sound.

“Most favourite song?…. every song has a bit of magic about it. “Sorrow” has lots of shades, colour and space in the arrangement. It’s kind of got a Latin edgy laid back groove. Takes you to a whole new realm and then pulls you back again ending with tasty lyrical soprano saxophone – I love the whole music creation process!”

“Once in a Blue Moon started off as the acoustic track for the album. The track has this whole energy about it. We played this track in Los Angeles and it brings back all those memories and the camaraderie that we lived and breathed during the live gigs that we’ve played.”

This track ended up being ‘drop boxed’ via the internet from LA for drums and percussion with Isaac Sanchez and bass guitar in Nashville. It features one of New Zealand’s top musicians Bruce Kerr on nylon acoustic guitar. “Music just has a life of its own” says Mykeljon.

“Radio is so typecast -  you’ve got to fit in the box and I don’t, so I’ve kind of turned that around and said, well I am what you hear, so adult contemporary would be the wider umbrella that this is set under. As an artist I perform in a variety of different styles, whether that be riding the edge of the blues or country, the ultimate quest is that the flavour remains cohesive. It's really about establishing yourself as an artist. It takes great strength artistically and a large working knowledge of music to pull it off. I am humbled by the recognition of the likes of Rickey Grundy, Pat Kelley and critics so far.

“I’ve been privileged to work with some amazing, innovative talented artists who have helped me put this album together, for which I am eternally grateful and forever in their debt!

“Just a great bunch of guys and such a pleasure to work with!

I’d like to dedicate this album to my godmother Elizabeth Maas, who was nothing short of a true inspiration to all who knew her.  On my quest for music, it was she who got me started.  Mykeljon’s dedication to his godmother, taken from his 2012 debut album, World Stood Still, helps mark a milestone in a long journey that has spanned years and continents. What’s remained consistent along the way, though, has been Mykeljon’s commitment and dedication. These traits have kept him going through the beginning of his musical education, the 4,500 live gigs, to the completion of the recording of this new album. But it was Mykeljon’s godmother who helped fuel that commitment, inspire that dedication, and nurture the talents he displayed from a very young age.

When it comes to substance Mykeljon excels… He is a natural when it comes to his craft as a songwriter, lyricist and performer. Mykeljon's material takes the listener on a passionate journey from love to social commentary to feel-good topics, all set to a variety of grooves and moods. No matter how radio tries to categorize him, Mykeljon is heartfelt soul.”- Rickey Grundy  Grammy award winning producer performer

Eventually, after seven years in LA Mykeljon returned home to Auckland, more experienced in performing and recording than ever. He started settling in to work on recording his album, World Stood Still. The sound of the record is Mykeljon’s own and is best summed up by Grundy when he says,

“The genius of Mykeljon and his music is that it crosses over several genres from rhythm and blues to smooth jazz to acoustic rock to world beat. He brings a true freshness and uniqueness to the industry, something that very few artists are able to successfully deliver."

Indeed, World Stood Still has already garnered positive reviews; Heath Andrews of ReviewYou.com rated it a perfect five stars and commented,

“…it leaves you with a sensation that you just heard something special… Mykeljon was able to lay down a solid collection of performances that captured the spirit of his songwriting.  This is a wonderfully unique album from a unique musical voice that the world can only hope to hear more from.”
